Remanufactured Engines
There are several reasons why you may need an engine swap, which is the process of switching out one engine for another. Perhaps you have a Ford Explorer engine and it has recently locked up on you or has something wrong with it that will make it eventually stop running. Another possibility is that you simply want better performance from your vehicle so are swapping engines for more power. Whatever the reason, remanufactured engines are a good option for engine swaps. When an engine is remanufactured, the process it goes through is a rigorous one. While some rebuilders may only change a rod or camshaft, a good one will do much more than that. If you are unsure, ask questions about the process your rebuilder uses for blocks, crankshafts, connecting rods, cylinder heads, honing, high speed cylinder boring and more. These are all very important parts of the rebuilding of an engine. Read More... |

2010 Mitsubish Lancer Evolution SE
Most cars these days try to be good at everything. Your average $30,000 sedan, for instance, accelerates to 60 mph in less than seven seconds, has a really nice interior, and doesn’t use that much fuel. The flip side of this is that very few cars are absolutely great at anything. Which is why it’s refreshing to drive the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. The Evo is not trying to please all buyers. It has an econo-car interior that isn’t even acceptable by present econo-car standards. It isn’t all that efficient, achieving only 19 mpg on the EPA combined scale despite its four-cylinder motivation. And even with a more subdued deck-lid spoiler (I actually prefer the full-blown wing), it’s not the sort of car you drive to a job interview. But the rare person who’s willing to put up with all these flaws for his (I could add “or her,” but who are we kidding) $35,000 will be rewarded with unqualified greatness. The Evo’s handling is superb, and so is its steering. Much credit of course goes to the Evo’s all-wheel-drive system, but honestly, it’s more than that. There are plenty of vehicles out there with similarly advanced torque-vectoring setups, but none feel so natural, so transparent. Even the Evo’s power delivery is a uniquely involving affair, with a dearth of torque followed by a fat wallop of boost. Annoying in everyday traffic? Sure. An absolute blast when the road opens up? You bet. Read More... |
REVIEWS: 2010 Volkswagen GTI - Four Seasons Wrap-Up
Ok, longtime readers may feel as if they've seen this movie before. In 2007, AUTOMOBILE MAGAZINE named the Volkswagen GTI its Automobile of the Year, calling it not only "the right car for our times" but also "the right car for any time." To see if it was the right car for a long time, we undertook a Four Seasons test of the GTI, and after twelve months we came away impressed. Three years later, the revised (Mark 6) GTI again took our highest award. Once more, we couldn't resist a long-term test. We did try to mix it up a bit. Whereas last time we chose the then-new four-door body style and the DSG dual-clutch automatic gearbox, this time we switched to the more traditional two-door configuration and a manual transmission. We stuck with the plaid cloth seats, because we still think they're supercool. We added some options, too: a sunroof ($1000), eighteen-inch "Detroit" wheels with summer tires ($890), swiveling bixenon headlamps ($700), a Dynaudio sound system ($476), and that modern essential, Bluetooth connectivity ($199). VW now agrees that it's essential, as it has made Bluetooth-and eighteen-inch wheels-standard for 2011. Our options pushed the GTI's $23,990 base price to $27,255. Read More... |
2012 Chrysler 300C SRT8 Official Photos
Those seeking the luxury angle of the 300C SRT8 will find the updated interior from the regular 2011 300C a welcome change. Adding to the base car’s vastly improved materials, the SRT8 gets real carbon-fiber trim along with the aforementioned unique steering wheel. Like the normal 300, the center stack also features the 8.4-inch touch-screen display, but here it comes with standard navigation and can control an optional and monstrous 900-watt, 19-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo. Additional luxury can be had from the Premium Leather Interior package, which stretches so-called “Foligno” leather over the door uppers, the instrument panel, the cluster hood, and the sides of the center console. Nappa leather then takes over to finish the doors, armrest, and center armrests. It’s a far cry from the hard plastics of the recent past. The Looks Backing up the underhood muscle are the new front and rear fascias, side skirts, dual four-inch (!) softball-shooter exhaust tips, and unique 20-inch wheels. The kit adds definite visual spice to the already-zesty look of the 300, but you can go one step further: A new Black Chrome package swaps in upper and lower grille surrounds, a rear valance strip, and wheels rendered in the dark shiny stuff. The SRT8 hits dealers in the third quarter of this year. We’ll take ours in all black with all the black chrome you’ve got. Read More... |
